Monitor your coverage in newspapers and magazines, and assess the impact of your campaign across various print media outlets seamlessly within Prowly!
What is print monitoring?
Print monitoring enables you to track mentions in print media, such as newspapers, magazines, and articles, ensuring comprehensive coverage of your campaign’s presence in traditional media. Prowly allows you to access copies of these publications, allowing you to stay informed about your print media visibility and analyze coverage effectively.
Adding print monitoring to your subscription provides you with 1 year of historical data for mentions from licensed print and online sources and paywall content.

Building a query for print mentions
Once you add print monitoring to your subscription, you can start monitoring mentions from the press.
Go to the Monitoring module, open a project, click "Create new search query", and choose the query type (brand, competitor, keyword, person or backlink). You will then be redirected to the query builder. Insert the keyword you're looking for and mark the print sources:
When creating a query for print monitoring, you can select an outlet category to refine the results more effectively. By default, selecting “Print” will select all 12 categories, but you can change that setting however you like. Here's a list of all the categories and their descriptions:
- Academic: News items from educational institutions, e.g., schools and universities.
- Consumer: News items from consumer and magazine-type publications.
- Corporate: Corporate websites, press release pages.
- General: News items from sources that are yet to be assigned a source category.
- Government: News and information from governments and government departments.
- Journal: Periodical publications, typically focused on science, technology, or professional topics.
- Local: News from local and regional news sources.
- Miscellaneous: News from sources that do not fit into any of the other source categories.
- National: News from national and international sources.
- Organization: News from organizations such as charities, political parties, and NGOs.
- Press wire: Designated press release and press wire sources.
- Trade: News items from a designated industry, profession, or technology-focused sources.
Moreover, you can now choose up to 1 year of historical results for your print query. To do so, open "Main filters" and navigate to "Date range". Please note that for all mentions other than print, the maximum date range available is 90 days.
Browsing print mentions
Once you have created a query, you can see the results in the mention browser. Each print mention contains useful information, including the outlet name, outlet category, type of mention icon (print), sentiment and whether the mention was added to favorites.
Additionally, the mention includes the following properties in the right-bottom corner:
- publication frequency - regular interval of time between each release of a publication, such as daily, weekly, or monthly,
- estimated reach - the number of copies of a publication that are distributed or sold during a specific period,
- country.
For licensed online content available with a print subscription, you will see all the details similar to regular online mentions.
To access the content of mentions, simply click on them. You will be redirected to a site where you can read their whole content.
Print monitoring filters
Filters specifically designed for print mentions can be found on the left side of the mention browser. For now, you can filter your mentions based on the outlet category:
Dashboard
Once you set up a query, you can monitor its statistics in a dashboard. A new widget specifically designed for print was introduced in the dashboard:
Top print articles – shows top 10 mentions based on the outlet circulation.
Moreover, already existing widgets that are compatible with the print source feature:
- Number of mentions
- Estimated reach
- Share of voice
- Sentiment
Reporting
You can add print mentions to your PR reports, using the "Add mentions from Media Monitoring".
Please note that the content will be blocked outside Prowly, so it won’t be possible to enter the article from the Online report, PDF, or PowerPoint.
To calculate the total number of print mentions on a metrics page in your PR report, utilize the "Offline pieces of coverage" metric.
